UCSD Geisel Library Celebrates the Art of Books

UC San Diego presents the unique art of reconstructed books to become new living works of art. The exhibition is the fourth annual San Diego Book Arts National Juried Exhibition on show at the Geisel Library, La Jolla. Of the 200 works submitted only 57 works, chosen by juror Carolee Campbell, are to be displayed in the library’s gallery for the annual exhibition, from May 26 until July 8.

Carolee Campbell is the founder of Ninja Press where she builds every aspect of each edition of books. This includes the initial design to the type set to the binding. Campbell believes the book to be a testimony to human being’s inability to keep it simple and uncontrollable need to decorate its content. In the modern day, as with our ancestors, books “sing with mataphors.” According to the juror, they enchant and captivate the viewer, drawing them back over and over “in order to rediscover that high energy transfer, that synergistic flow from part to part and back to whole.”
This show of contemporary book making is inspired by the extensive history of decorating books. The show exhibits fine examples of beautification through illustration, letterpress and stunning binding. It displays books cut, torn and pasted together in innovative formations producing exclusive limited edition prints.
While in La Jolla why not visit at another local art gallery. Thumbprint Gallery exhibits works by local and international urban and lowbrow artists. Currently on show are works by two local illustrators Nick McPherson and Tocayo in the exhibition “Southern Style.”
